Loading a Dumpster on a Commercial Job: Height and Weight Limits

How commercial crews in Indianapolis keep a roll-off below its top edge and inside its included weight, so pickups stay on schedule and extra weight charges stay off the bill.

Two things decide whether a roll-off dumpster leaves your job on schedule and on budget: how high it is loaded, and how much the load weighs. They sound like the same thing. They are not, and commercial crews run into both.

Keep everything below the top edge

A dumpster has to be hauled down Indianapolis streets once it leaves your site. Material piled above the top edge can shift or fall during the drive, so we can only pick up a container that is loaded level with or below its top edge. If the driver arrives and the load is stacked high, the excess has to come off before the dumpster can go.

On a shared commercial site, the easiest fix is telling every trade the rule before the first load goes in. Flat items laid in first and broken-down material packed tight leave more room than loose piles.

Weight is a separate limit

Every size includes a set amount of weight, from 1 ton on the 10 yard to 4 tons on the 40 yard, and anything over that is $75 per ton. A container can be full to the top edge and still be under its weight, or half full of concrete and already over it. Our guide to dumpster weight limits lists what each size includes.

On commercial jobs, concrete, brick, asphalt, roofing shingles and wet soil are the materials that reach the limit first. If a phase of the job produces mostly heavy debris, tell us before that container is delivered so the size fits the weight, not just the volume.

The right size prevents both problems

Most overweight and overfilled loads come from the wrong container for the job. Too small, and crews stack above the edge to avoid calling for a swap. Too big for heavy debris, and the load passes its included weight before it fills up.

That is why we ask about the job before we recommend a size: what is going in, roughly how much, and how the project is phased. Tell us if most of the debris is heavy, and we will point you to a size whose included weight fits it. You can compare every size, its dimensions and its included weight on our sizes and prices page.

If a container is filling faster than planned

  • Stop loading at the top edge and stage extra material beside it.
  • Call us early to set up a swap for a fresh container or add a second one.
  • Let us know about heavy material that was not part of the original plan, so the size still fits.

The earlier you call, the more options there are for the schedule.

Protecting the surface under the container

Tell us if the dumpster is going on a new driveway, stamped concrete, pavers or asphalt, and we will plan the placement around it. We use premium driveway pads, so the dumpster does not touch the surface.
